Itinerary

Don Khong Island to Dong.
This trip starts at the junction of Road 13 to Don Khong Island. It is best to get here via a long distance bus. From here, slather on the sunscreen and a hat and ride 1 km to the bank of the Mekong. Catch a boat across to Muang Khong (50.000 – 70.000 Kip). This is good place to stock up on water and snacks. Then head north; the road is mostly paved and in good condition, though there is little shade.

Side extension to Don San
At Dong (“km11”), you can add an off-road extension to the northern most part of the island. Go ahead for about 4 km, still on paved road up to Khong Lem. Cross the new short concrete bridge behind Khong Lem to explore a remote and sandy extension to the north of Dong Khong, called Don San (here : mountain bikes only). This is the northern most part of the island and has only recently been connected by bridge. Then turn around to head back to Khong Lem.

Khong Lem back to Muang Khong
At Khong Lem, turn right and head south in the direction of Muang Saen. There are traditional villages along the way (marked with signs) that you can stop to look at. At Muang Saen, there is an optional shortcut if you’re feeling tired; turn left and in about 8km return to Muang Khong. Otherwise, ride on southeast until you reach a new Mekong Bridge on the other edge of the island. Head left before the bridge. From here, it’s a 4.5km ride back to Muang Khong, where you can relax, stay overnight or cross the Mekong back to Road 13, the start of your journey.
